Hands on Ministry Opportunities

The Church’s Missions Committee works to offer a variety of mission service opportunities right here in our local community. These service opportunities provide an inspiring way to live out God’s call to serve others no matter our age — there is a need and an opportunity for all ages to serve. Select one of the options below for more information about a local mission service opportunity for you, a group of friends, a Sunday School class or even your entire family:

Would you be interested in participating in a “hands on” ministry through our church? If you are interested let the church know if the following areas are something you would like to participate. Some of these ministries are on going and some would need to be organized based on interest from this questionnaire.

PRAYER SHAWL – this is a ministry to knit or crochet shawls to give to people who are experiencing difficulties in life.  Basic knitting or crocheting lessons can be offered

FOOD PANTRIES – this would involve contacting the food pantries and see what kind of volunteer help they need

BEYOND HOMELESS – this is the women’s shelter in Greencastle – currently 3 people in our church are preparing a meal once a month

VOLUNTEER IN PRESCHOOL – reading and/or playing with the children or any other volunteer work needed

CLOVERDALE SCHOOLS – we would need to check with the school to see where help is needed if there is interest here

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION – currently several people are serving the noon meal once a month – this mission is in Terre Haute

MEN’S VOLUNTEER GROUP – this would be a group of men who are interested in making minor repairs for people in need, yardwork, just giving general help where needed for both people in our congregation in need or in the community

NURSING HOMES – this could involve playing games with residents, reading to them, visiting them regularly, or whatever the nursing home might use volunteers for

DEPAUW MOVE-OUT – John Garner is in charge of this ministry and it involves a once-a-year volunteer effort helping with sorting items that DePauw students leave behind when going home for the summer. Last year over 100 families were served

MISSIONS TRIP – this would probably involve traveling to someplace within a few hours drive for a week-end or overnight – suggestions have been the Midwest Missions Distribution Center in Illinois, the Redbird Mission in Kentucky or the Living Waters Mission in southern Indiana

HAITI Stan and Gloria Curtis – You can help locally sorting donations and preparing for the Christmas Bags for the Haiti container.  Over 10,000 Christmas Bags were sent, along with corn, peanut butter, car parts, shoes and clothing

DONATE BLOOD – One pint of blood can help save the lives of up to three patients.

COMPASSION – You can make an eternal difference in the life of a child who is waiting for a sponsor. Sponsor a child in poverty who has been waiting 6 months or longer!
